Understanding radiation therapy

Why supportive care matters during radiation

If you are preparing for or currently navigating radiation therapy, you likely have many questions about how to best support your skin, energy, and overall health during your sessions. Whether you want to take a proactive role in your health or you are in recovery and dealing with the lingering effects of treatment, you are in the right place. Our role is to provide you with a personalized, evidence-informed support plan that remains safe alongside your conventional care, focused entirely on improving your quality of life at every stage.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to precisely target and destroy cancer cells. While this treatment is highly effective at shrinking tumors, the nature of radiation means that surrounding healthy tissues, particularly the skin and underlying structures in the treatment area, can also be affected. Common side effects like fatigue, skin sensitivity, and local inflammation occur as your body works to repair and restore healthy cells during the course of your treatment.

  • Protect skin integrity in the treated area
  • Steady your energy through cumulative fatigue
  • Support healthy tissue repair and recovery
Why timing matters

Support that bridges your oncology care

Thoughtful, evidence-informed support during radiation helps you protect healthy tissue, hold your energy steady, and stay on track to complete your full course of treatment. Since JOSIE is a virtual naturopathic clinic, every appointment happens from home across Ontario, so it is far easier to stay consistent with support even on the busiest treatment days.

Radiation effects tend to build gradually over a course, so the timing of supportive care matters. Starting early gives us the most room to help.

  • Protect the skin in your treatment area before irritation sets in
  • Shore up your nutritional reserves before cumulative fatigue takes hold
  • Keep your plan adapting as your body responds week to week
Our approach

A naturopathic approach to radiation support

Skin integrity & barrier support

We provide evidence-based guidance on topical and systemic approaches to support skin healing, minimize redness or irritation, and protect tissue health in the treated area.

Energy & fatigue management

Radiation often causes cumulative fatigue. We design nutrition and lifestyle protocols to support mitochondrial function and energy reserves, helping you maintain your daily activities.

Inflammatory modulation

By focusing on systemic inflammation, we help reduce the severity of treatment-related side effects and support your immune system's ability to function optimally throughout your sessions.

Safe, evidence-informed integration

We prioritize herb-drug-nutrient interaction reviews. Every recommendation is researched to ensure it works safely alongside your specific radiation plan and does not interfere with its effectiveness.

Your radiation program at JOSIE

Three clear steps, from active treatment to lasting recovery

  1. Step 1

    Active treatment support

We begin with a careful review of your oncology timeline, pathology reports, staging, and radiation schedule. While you are in active treatment, our focus is aimed entirely at reducing your side effects, improving how well you tolerate each session, and supporting your treatment's efficacy with precise, safe therapies that complement your conventional care without interfering with it.

  2. Step 2

    Uncovering post-treatment root drivers

Once your course is complete, we shift toward long-term resilience — running specialized testing to evaluate five core physiological pillars: blood sugar and insulin regulation, inflammation and immune balance, gut and liver function, nervous system and stress resilience, and oxidative stress and nutrient stores. Together these reveal the exact drivers shaping your recovery.

  3. Step 3

    Supporting your foundations

Once we know which drivers and lingering effects of treatment need targeted care, we build your customized plan — a deliberate, evidence-based strategy of lifestyle adaptations, precise whole-food nutrition, and research-backed natural protocols designed to safely rebuild your foundational health. If advanced therapies such as high-dose IV vitamin C or mistletoe are indicated, those in-person treatments are coordinated for you at our partner naturopathic IV lounge in Etobicoke, Toronto, while your consultations and monitoring continue virtually through JOSIE.

Are Antibodies Really Causing the Damage in Hashimoto’s?

Not exactly. Antibodies aren't the main force destroying thyroid tissue in Hashimoto's — they're better understood as flags. The actual damage comes from lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) that follow those flags into the thyroid and drive the inflammatory process.
